Somatic Experiencing® is a short-term naturalistic approach to the resolution and healing of trauma developed by Dr. Peter Levine. It is a psychobiological method for resolving symptoms of trauma and chronic stress. It promotes balance, resiliency, equanimity and engagement in an individual’s life.
In the face of trauma events, people would ideally release the energy they accumulate during these stressful events through the flight, flight or freeze response. We often override these natural ways of regulating the nervous system with feelings of shame and pervasive thoughts, judgments and fears resulting in cognitive, emotional and physical manifestations of traumatic stress.
